House, Jerusalem, november 1995
Anatoly Basin,
Roger Ychai and Hedi Tarjan
arrived in Jerusalem in the period between 1970 and 1980, from St. Petersburg,
Paris and Budapest, respectively.
Basin's
art and way of teaching was a revelation for Tarjan
and Ychai and pointed them towards
a new artistic direction.
Basin,
Ychai,
Tarjan and others meet once a week
and paint together. In spite of differences in their artistic heritage,
the group developed a common language in painting.

Basin
and Tarjan studied art in the European
tradition. Ychai was born in Algeria,
grew up in France and became a musician.
In 1991, Basin
started to teach painting at the Jerusalem Arts Centre, where Tarjan
has been teaching since 1986, and Ychai,
Tarjan's friend, joined them later.
Their collaboration attracted additional pupils and the present group,
"Jerusalmix", came into being.
